A study in Mawlana’s SpeechHawliya 2017Khaled Farid, MontrealMay 11, 2017In his speech on the occasion of the 2017,hawliya, Mawlana Sheikh Mohammed said: "Seek knowledge because the search for knowledge is a sign of devotion. The search for knowledge is an act of piety and its sharing is a glorification of Allah. The quest for knowledge is a form of jihad, the sharing of knowledge is an act of charity. Knowledge is your companion in solitude, your faithful counselor in prosperity or adversity, your most faithful friend, your most precious ally and the light that guides you on the way to Paradise. "If Mawlana chose not elaborate, it is possibly because he wanted us to start thinking about the meaning of this statement ourselves.Allah said: " Those of His servants only who are possessed of knowledge fear Allah”This verse is praise by Allah, Glory be to Him, of those who seek and possess knowledge and an enormous demonstration of their status as well as their immense superiority compared to ordinary people. And those who are referred to by the title "Those who are possessed of knowledge," are the those who possess the knowledge of religion, those who fear Allah, and whose acts are motivated by this fear of Allah. However, we must first understand what the term "fear" means in this context. This is a spiritual station called "the station of fear" (maqam al Khaouf), which is a state of pure fear of Allah and can not be compared to the fear that people experience in the face of imminent danger. It is a state of fear that can only be reached by the chosen one: The walis, the saints. The walis are therefore those who are possessed of knowledge, those who through the knowledge received from Allah have learned to fear Him as He deserves to be feared.Every believer fears Allah, every Muslim fears Allah, yet in each case the definition of fear is completely different. The fear of those who know Haqiqah (walis) is different from that of those who know sharia, which is different from that of the common Muslim. The fear of the first group is by far more pure, perfect and true. And so it is that this fear of Allah is the motivation behind all their actions, And they transfer to others that which they have learned, and so they become those about whom Mawlana said: "The sharing of knowledge is an act of charity."True believers are those whose hearts shudder at the mention of Allah’s name. And when His verses are recited to them, it increases their faith. And they put their trust in their Lord "The verse refers rather to those who are already believers, but who listen to Allah’s verses and become more so. These are the perfect believers, whose faith is perfect. The understanding of the term "ayat" also varies according to the spiritual level of the person. For some, "ayats" simply means "verses", for others it means "signs." The definition of "sign" varies in turn from one person to another. For some people, the "signs" of Allah are to be found in the contemplation of his creation, for others the signs are those who are called:” The veracious hidden guides "(Al-Hudat al-Sadeqouna Oulu Khafa): The Mathanis, prophets and messengers, The great saints.Hidden truthful guides are signs of Allah and have reached the perfect Faith. Their hearts hearts are filled with true devotion and true fear. Their sincerity with Allah is perfect and based on a true knowledge of the Lord.Imam Ghazzali said: "Fear is either a trembling of the heart in the face of imminent danger, or in a deeper sense, it is the fact of really knowing Allah through his names, which will inevitably engender fear. That is why Allah said, "Among his servants, only the those who are possessed of knowledge fear Allah.""Fear" is therefore a direct consequence of the knowledge of Allah; and the knowledge of Allah requires a prior knowledge of all the names of Allah. The common Muslim does not fear Allah though he may think he does, because "Allah" is the name that encompasses all the other names of the Lord. In fact, whenever he commits a sin, it is Allah’s punishment that he fear, and not Allah himself.Knowledge of Allah is therefore a prerequisite of the fear of Allah. And the knowledge of Allah requires the walk towards Allah, with the help of a guide who already knows all the paths. It is a progression through the names of Allah and it is only once the mysteries of the names and opposing names have been revealed to the Mourid that he can truly know “Allah”. Only then will he be worthy of the title of "possessed of knowledge" and then he may experience first hand the wonders of the true fear of Allah.Given the above, it is clear that Mawlana encourages the mourids to learn all they can about Religion, but emphasis is on the knowledge of Tasawwuf , because it lead to devotion, piety and glorification, as mentioned in Mawlana’s speech.Clearly, Mawlana encourages us to persevere in the search for this knowledge that leads to the knowledge of Allah blessed be His name: "Knowledge is your companion in solitude, your faithful counselor in prosperity or adversity, your most Faithful friend, your most precious ally and the light that guides you on the road to Paradise. "Once Allah has permitted you to know Him, you will attain true piety true devotion and true glorification; And Allah the Almighty will then be all that you will ever need: Your friend, your ally, and the light that will guide you on the way to Paradise.Khaled Farid
